Gullfoss frozen in winter

Private tours · Reykjavík · October – March

The Golden Circle in winter.
Private, and planned around the light.

Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss between October and March — frozen edges, steam, snow and empty viewpoints, with a private guide who plans the day around five hours of daylight. Hotel pickup in Reykjavík.

Why winter

Fewer people. More drama. The same three stops, transformed.

From October to March the Golden Circle is a different route. Gullfoss freezes at the edges and throws spray that turns to ice on the railings. The Geysir field steams like a kettle in the cold air. Þingvellir's lava lies under snow and the rift is empty at ten in the morning. And when the sky is clear after dark, the drive home is a northern-lights hunt at no extra charge.

The catch is daylight: five hours of it in December. A coach can't plan around that. A private tour can — we leave when the light does and put the stop you care most about at the best hour.

In December and January we recommend a 10:00 pickup: Þingvellir in the long blue dawn, Geysir and Gullfoss in full daylight, and the drive back as the sky goes dark — the best hour for northern lights if the forecast is kind. Add an hour (15,000 kr) and we'll wait at a dark spot on the way home.

Weather & safety

Snow is fine. Storms are not — and we'll tell you honestly.

The vehicle is winter-equipped and your guide checks road.is and the Met Office the night before and the morning of. Snow, cold and wind are normal and the tour runs. If a road closes or a storm warning makes it unsafe, we say so before pickup and you choose: another day, or a full refund.

Wear layers, a windproof shell, a hat, gloves and shoes with grip. We carry spare ice grips for the Gullfoss path.

Questions

Asked before this tour

How much does a private Golden Circle tour cost?

154,900 kr for a private group of 1–4 and 184,900 kr for 5–8, VAT included — per group, not per person. For a family of four that's about 38,725 kr each; for eight, about 23,112 kr each, which is close to a small-group minibus seat but with your own guide, your own timing and nobody else on board. Entrances, parking and Reykjavík hotel pickup are included; the only extras are optional add-on stops with admission fees, Keflavík pickup (25,000 kr) and extra hours (15,000 kr each).

Can we see the northern lights on the Golden Circle?

Not on the tour itself — the lights need darkness, and the tour runs in daylight. But in winter the drive back to Reykjavík is after dark, and if the forecast is good your guide will stop somewhere dark on the way. For a proper hunt, add an hour or two; we'll quote it.

How long is the Golden Circle tour?

About six hours door to door — roughly 240 km of driving with an hour or so at each of the three stops. Because it's private, that's a starting point rather than a schedule: stay longer at Gullfoss, add Kerið, or ask for a shorter five-hour version if you have a flight or a ship to catch.

Is the Golden Circle worth it in winter?

Yes — many guides prefer it. Gullfoss half-frozen, steam pouring off the Geysir field in the cold, snow on the Þingvellir lava, and far fewer people. Daylight is short in December and January, so we plan the route around it, and the vehicle is winter-equipped. If roads close for weather, you get another day or a full refund. More on the winter tour.

What if the weather is grey?

Iceland decides the weather. Grey days at Þingvellir and Gullfoss have their own drama, and the route works in rain, snow and sun — but if conditions are truly unsafe we'll offer you another day or a full refund. We'd rather move you than take your money for a tour we're not proud of.

What should we wear?

Layers, a windproof jacket and shoes you can walk on wet rock in — in every month. Gullfoss soaks you with spray in summer and the paths ice over in winter. You're never far from a warm vehicle, so you don't need to dress for an expedition.

How do we pay, and when?

Send the request, we confirm your date by email within a few hours, and you pay by card (Visa / Mastercard) through a secure Straumur link. Nothing is charged until you've confirmed, and your date is reserved once payment is received. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
