Þingvellir in midnight-sun light

Private tours · Reykjavík · 20 May – 25 July

The midnight sun tour.
The Golden Circle at 11 pm, in daylight, with nobody there.

Late May to late July, an evening departure from Reykjavík: Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss in the long golden light after the coaches have gone, back after midnight with the sun still up. Private, 1–8 guests, one price per group.

Late May to late July

The Golden Circle at eleven at night, with the sun still up.

For two months either side of midsummer the sun barely sets over southern Iceland. It slides along the horizon for hours, the light goes gold and then pink and then gold again, and the coaches have all gone back to town. This is the tour we're named after: an evening departure from Reykjavík, Þingvellir in the long low light, Strokkur erupting against a peach sky, Gullfoss with nobody on the path — and back in the city around one in the morning, still light.

Same three stops, same private vehicle, same price. A completely different day.

The evening plan

Depart at six, home after midnight

TimeWhereWhy then
18:00Pickup at your Reykjavík hotelAfter dinner if you like — or we stop for it on the way
19:00ÞingvellirDay-trippers gone; the rift walk in warm side-light
20:30Geysir & StrokkurSteam lit from below by the low sun, empty viewing ring
21:30GullfossThe sun is on the falls, not behind them — the best hour of the day for photos
23:00 – 00:30Back to ReykjavíkThrough the golden hour that lasts three hours, with a stop wherever the sky is doing something

Sunset in Reykjavík is around 23:30 in early June and midnight at the solstice; it never gets darker than dusk. The timings above are a starting point — leave later, stay longer, add an hour (15,000 kr). Runs roughly 20 May – 25 July; outside those dates ask us for a late-afternoon departure instead.

Practical

Warm layers, a full battery and no alarm clock the next morning

Evenings are cooler even in July — bring a proper jacket and a hat. Your guide brings blankets, a thermos and knows the two or three spots where the light does its best work. Children are welcome; plenty fall asleep on the drive back, which is the point of a private vehicle. Bring a phone charger: you'll shoot more than you think.

And if the evening is overcast? Iceland's grey is soft and the stops are still empty. If it's genuinely bad we'll say so before pickup and offer another evening or a full refund.

Questions

Asked before this tour

What is a midnight sun tour?

A tour that runs through the Icelandic summer evening, when the sun stays above or just below the horizon all night. Ours is the Golden Circle — Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss — leaving Reykjavík around 18:00 and returning after midnight in daylight, as a private tour for your group only.

When can we see the midnight sun in Iceland?

From roughly 20 May to 25 July in Reykjavík the sky never gets fully dark; at the summer solstice, 21 June, the sun sets just after midnight and rises before three. We run the evening departure through that window; in late April, early May and August we suggest a late-afternoon start instead.

Is it really light enough for photos at 23:00?

Yes — it's the best light of the day. The sun sits low for hours, so everything is side-lit and golden rather than flat, and your guide takes your photos at every stop.

Does the evening tour cost more?

No. 154,900 kr for 1–4 guests and 184,900 kr for 5–8, per private group, VAT included, same as the daytime tour. Extra hours are {PRICE_EXTRA_HOUR} kr each if you want to stay out later.

Is this suitable for children?

Yes. The walking is easy — level paths and boardwalks, never more than half an hour at a stretch. Children count toward the group of eight, and child seats are available if you tell us the ages when you book.

What should we wear?

Layers, a windproof jacket and shoes you can walk on wet rock in — in every month. Gullfoss soaks you with spray in summer and the paths ice over in winter. You're never far from a warm vehicle, so you don't need to dress for an expedition.

How do we pay, and when?

Send the request, we confirm your date by email within a few hours, and you pay by card (Visa / Mastercard) through a secure Straumur link. Nothing is charged until you've confirmed, and your date is reserved once payment is received. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
